Delhi Police has strengthened security measures throughout city markets bustling with shoppers in anticipation of Diwali and other festivals.

The city has remained on high alert since October 20, following an explosion that damaged a wall of the CRPF school in Rohini’s Prashant Vihar area. Fortunately, the blast did not result in any injuries, though it did cause damage to hoardings of nearby shops and window panes of parked vehicles.

Key markets such as Chandni Chowk, Azadpur, and Ghazipur are under close scrutiny from police, given their popularity with visitors from outside Delhi.

“Extensive security arrangements have been implemented, particularly in markets, malls, key installations, and crowded areas. Police presence has been increased through heightened patrolling and the deployment of additional pickets. All personnel are on high alert to prevent any incidents,” stated Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Apoorva Gupta.

Loading and unloading activities will be prohibited from 12 PM to 8 PM in Sadar Bazar, a significant wholesale market.

“All precautionary measures are being taken by police personnel to ensure smooth celebrations during the festival,” said DCP of the north district, Raja Banthia.

Additionally, the police are monitoring movements in border areas.

Southeast DCP Ravi Kumar Singh noted that foot patrols have been intensified throughout the markets.

“We are maintaining strict surveillance from maachan and morcha, and drones have been deployed to monitor market activities. No one will be permitted to disrupt law and order,” DCP Singh emphasised.

A close watch is being kept on all railway and metro stations, with additional forces set to be deployed to identify any suspicious activities, according to another officer.

Patrolling teams made up of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have been instructed to promptly report any suspicious activities to their superiors.

“Anti-sabotage checks are being regularly conducted along railway tracks and in markets, supported by dog squads and bomb disposal units,” the officer explained.

“CCTV cameras are being monitored continuously by teams, and PCR units have been instructed to be prepared for any eventualities,” the officer added.

New Delhi DCP Devesh Kumar Mahla mentioned that the teams are fully equipped to handle any situation, having undergone several mock drills.
