Delhi’s grim report card: Capital most unsafe for women, girls and senior citizens

In a grim record, Delhi has outnumbered eight union territories in the country, emerging as the most unsafe metropolitan city for women. Besides, the national capital has also recorded highest number of crimes against senior citizens across the country.

According to the National Crime Record Bureau, two minor girls were raped every day last year in the national capital, which was the most unsafe metropolitan city for women across the country. Delhi was followed by the financial capital Mumbai, which saw 5,543 such instances, and Bengaluru with 3,127 cases.

The cases of crimes against women in Delhi accounted for 32.20 per cent of total crimes in the category among all 19 metropolitan cities. Mumbai and Bengaluru accounted for 12.76 per cent and 7.2 per cent of total crimes in 19 cities, respectively.

Glaring Numbers

Delhi has reported the highest number of cases of crimes against women in the categories related to kidnapping (3948), cruelty by husbands (4674) and girl child rapes (833) as compared to other metropolitan cities with over two million population in 2021.

On average, over two girls were raped every day in Delhi in 2021, the data showed.

The national capital registered 13,982 cases of crimes against women in 2021, while the total crimes in all 19 metropolitan cities were 43,414, according to the report.

The capital has registered 136 cases of dowry death in 2021, which is 36.26 per cent of total deaths due to the menace in 19 metropolitan cities.

The city also reported 3,948 cases of abduction and kidnapping of women, out of a total of 8,664 cases in all metropolitan cities.

Delhi also reported 2,022 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage their modesty last year.

There were 1,357 reported cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (girl child victims only) in 2021, the NCRB said.

As many as 833 cases of girl child rape, the highest among the metropolitan cities, were reported in 2021, as per the data.

The national capital also recorded the highest number of kidnapping cases among the 19 metropolitan cities last year.

Most unsafe for senior citizens

Delhi is the most unsafe for senior citizens among all metropolitan cities in India accounting for over 27 per cent of total crimes committed against people aged 60 years and above in these cities, according to the latest NCRB data.

Moreover, the national capital has also witnessed a 28.69 per cent surge in crime against senior citizens in 2021 as compared to the previous year with 1,166 cases registered by the police, the data of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) showed.

In 2020, 906 crimes against senior citizens were reported in the national capital. The charge sheet rate in cases involving such people is also quite low in Delhi at 31.5 per cent.

After Delhi, Mumbai also reported a high number of crimes against senior citizens (987). As many as 4,264 cases of various crimes against senior citizens were reported in 19 metropolitan cities in 2021.

Among the crimes against senior citizens, theft is the most common with 659 cases reported in Delhi in 2021, followed by cheating and fraud (153).

In 2021, Delhi Police investigated 2,318 cases of crimes against senior citizens, out of which 1,152 were pending investigation from the previous year, NCRB data shows.

Highest number economic offences

According to the latest NCRB report, Delhi reported an increase of 13.6 per cent in such cases in comparison to 2020.

In 2020, despite the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown-related restrictions, the national capital witnessed 4,524 cases related to economic offences and 5,153 cases were reported in 2021, the data for 2020-2021 showed.

According to the report, out of the total registered cases in 2021, a maximum of 4,831 cases were registered under forgery and cheating while 276 cases were registered under criminal breach of trust and 36 others under counterfeiting.
