Delhi Weather: Amid scorching heat, IMD forecasts thunderstorm, rain on Friday

Delhi Weather: Amid the scorching heat in Delhi after days of red alert, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorm and rain later on Friday, which may bring some relief to the capital’s residents.

The minimum temperature settled at 31 degrees Celsius on Friday, four notches above the season’s average. The maximum temperature is expected to reach around 42 degrees Celsius, the IMD said.

The relative humidity was recorded at 67 per cent at 8.30 am.

The weather office has forecast partly cloudy skies with the possibility of thunderstorm and rain later in the day, offering a glimmer of respite from the searing heat.

A red alert, the most severe warning level, was issued for Delhi as the city experienced extreme heatwave conditions, with the mercury rising between 41 and 45 degrees Celsius.

Delhi’s air quality continued to remain in the ‘moderate’ category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 195 at 9 am, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed.

According to the CPCB, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 and 500 ‘severe’.

From air coolers and water purifiers to upgraded washrooms and nutrition-focused meal plans, the Delhi government has taken steps to improve living conditions in its shelter homes, including Asha Kiran, under the Social Welfare Department. An official from the department said that repair and installation work had been completed at the Asha Kiran in Rohini, including the renovation of the park and the provision of toys, sports kits and a television. The facility currently houses around 800 children with special needs.

At 8,423 MW, Delhi breaks 2025 peak power demand record

Delhi: Amid the scorching heat, the national capital on Thursday witnessed a peak power demand of 8,423 Megawatt (MW) at 3.06 PM, according to the discoms officials. This comes the day after the city recorded the peak power demand of 8,231 MW at 10.55 PM. As per a senior official from the State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC), “This year, the peak power demand of Delhi is expected to cross 9,000 MW. Previously, an all-time high peak demand in the national capital was recorded at 8,656 in 2024,” he said. According to the official, on June 11, Wednesday, the national capital experienced its first power demand that crossed 8,000 MW.
