At 8,423 MW, Delhi breaks 2025 peak power demand record

Electricity demand in Delhi, gripped by a severe heatwave, surged past the 8,000-MW mark for the first time this year on Wednesday

Delhi: Amid the scorching heat, the national capital on Thursday witnessed a peak power demand of 8,423 Megawatt (MW) at 3.06 PM, according to the discoms officials. This comes the day after the city recorded the peak power demand of 8,231 MW at 10.55 PM.

As per a senior official from the State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC), “This year, the peak power demand of Delhi is expected to cross 9,000 MW. Previously, an all-time high peak demand in the national capital was recorded at 8,656 in 2024,” he said. According to the official, on June 11, Wednesday, the national capital experienced its first power demand that crossed 8,000 MW.

The BSES Rajdhani Power Limited and the BSES Yamuna Power Limited also successfully met the peak power demand of 3,747 MW and 1,832 MW respectively in their areas. On the other hand, they were also able to meet the peak power demand of 3,749 MW and 1,834 MW respectively in their areas, during the night of June 11.

Peak power demand in BRPL’s areas of South and West Delhi is expected to reach around 4,050 MW during the summers of 2025. On the other hand, in BYPL’s area of East and Central Delhi, it is expected to touch around 1,900 MW this year.

Informing about the power demand met by green power sources, a senior official said, “Over 2,100 MW of green power will play an important role in ensuring reliable power during the summer months in the BSES area. This includes around 888 MW of solar power from SECI, 500 MW of wind power, 40 MW from waste-to-energy. BSES efforts in ensuring reliable power are also being helped by 160 MW+ of rooftop solar installed on rooftops in South, West, East, and Central Delhi.”

This year, the peak power demand of Delhi is expected to cross 9,000 MW. Previously, an all-time high peak demand in the national capital was recorded at 8,656 in 2024.

In 2023, Delhi’s peak power demand crossed 8,000 MW for the very first time.
