Delhi weather: Light rain brings relief, AQI deteriorates again

Delhi weather: Residents of Delhi experienced light rainfall on Thursday morning, offering a short-lived break from the city’s pollution woes. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), thunderstorms accompanied by rain are expected later in the day, potentially leading to improved air quality in the coming days.

Air Quality Worsens Despite Rain

Despite the showers, Delhi’s air quality slipped back into the ‘poor’ category, with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 260 at 7 AM. The capital had maintained a ‘moderate’ air quality level for several days before deteriorating due to stagnant weather conditions and reduced wind speed, which hindered pollutant dispersion.

AQI Levels in Different Parts of Delhi

As of 7 AM, pollution levels varied across the city, with several locations reporting ‘poor’ and ‘very poor’ air quality:

Very Poor (AQI above 300): Mundka (344), Punjabi Bagh (325), Bawana (318), Jahangirpuri (316), Ashok Vihar (300)

Poor (AQI between 200-300): ITO (290), Anand Vihar (276), Burari Crossing (259), Patparganj (257), R K Puram (251), Shadipur (267)

Weather Outlook and Rain Forecast

The IMD has predicted a maximum temperature of 26°C and a minimum of 18°C for Thursday. Over the past 24 hours, minimum temperatures in Delhi-NCR have seen a slight rise. Rainfall is expected on February 27 and 28, with daytime temperatures climbing to 28°C and nighttime lows around 17°C. Misty conditions are likely to set in from March 1.

AQI Forecast & Pollution Control Measures

The Air Quality Early Warning System predicts that Delhi’s air quality will improve to the ‘moderate’ category between February 28 and March 1. In response to changing conditions, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has lifted Stage II restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), keeping only Stage I measures in place. Officials continue to monitor the situation to prevent further deterioration.

Although the brief spell of rain has provided some relief, pollution remains a significant concern. Authorities urge residents to adhere to air quality guidelines and take necessary precautions to safeguard their health.
