Filmmaker Leena Manimekalai has been summoned by Delhi’s Tis Hazari court on a plea seeking a decree against her yet-to-be-released film Kaali for depicting a Hindu goddess in an uncalled-for way in its posters and promotional videos. The poster was tweeted from Manimekalai’s official Twitter account.

Additional Senior Civil Judge Abhishek Kumar directed the filmmaker to appear before the court on 6 August saying she needed to be heard before passing any order.

The petition filed by Raj Gaurav states that the poster of the film depicts Hindu goddess Kali smoking a cigarette which not only hurts the religious sentiments of common Hindus but is also against the basics of morality and decency.

Manimekalai has directed 15 documentary films till now, and Kaali was her 16th film. Several police complaints have been filed against the filmmaker across the country.
