“Doctors and physicians have an added responsibility”, Delhi LG addresses medical students at MAMC

Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena said on Thursday that fostering research should be a top priority for any prestigious medical institution, along with teaching and training.

He stressed the need of basic research for human growth in his speech at the Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), where he presented degrees to MBBS and postgraduate students.

At the ceremony, degrees were given to about 236 MBBS graduates from 2020 and 248 students who finished their studies the previous year.

Additionally, degrees were given to 356 post-graduate students from the 2020 and 2021 classes.

“In a nation, yet marred by poverty and disease, doctors and physicians have an added responsibility of scaling hitherto unscored frontiers, the LG said.

The most important prerequisite for doing this, he continued, is pure research devoid of professional and commercial considerations.

Saxena asserted the value of research in the learning process and said that it should be the most significant barometer of an academic institution’s greatness. Any prestigious medical institution should make encouraging research a top priority in addition to teaching and training, he said.

Saxena also emphasised how crucial it is for medical institutions to provide their students with high-quality education, as this was never more apparent than during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am sure as you pass out of the portals of your alma mater, you would have sufficiently learnt from this experience and will meet the challenges that stand ahead of you in your practice and further research,” he added.

The LG also told students that he hoped they would graduate not only as better, more caring doctors, but also as good people.

The annual day of MAMC was organised this year after the coronavirus pandemic enforced a year-long break. Delhi Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar was also present at the event.
