Four members of an interstate gang that allegedly targeted railway passengers by stealing valuables from their bags inside moving auto-rickshaws have been arrested, with stolen gold and silver jewellery recovered, Delhi Police said on Friday.

The accused were identified as Nawab (39), Sahid alias Kaluwa (40), Rafique (50) and Nadeem alias Darbangha (31). Police said Rafique was previously involved in 12 cases of robbery, theft and Arms Act.

The arrests were made after registration of the FIR when a Bawana resident reported that jewellery had been stolen from his family’s bag while travelling in an auto-rickshaw hired outside Old Delhi Railway Station on July 18.

According to police, the complainant and his family were lured into boarding the auto after being offered a low fare. Near Pratap Nagar Metro Station, they were asked to get down on the pretext that the vehicle had broken down. The complainant later discovered that jewellery kept in his bag was missing.

Police said the accused were identified and arrested on July 19. Further investigation is underway.
