G20 Preparations: Over 11,000 dumping spots cleaned in Delhi, says Mayor

Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi announced on Sunday that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken significant steps to ensure cleanliness and preparation ahead of the G20 Summit.

She said over 11,000 garbage-prone areas have been identified and cleaned, with anti-larval spraying taking place in all city wards.

Speaking at a press conference held at the AAP headquarters, Oberoi highlighted the formation of teams responsible for cleaning areas adjacent to upscale hotels, tourist attractions, and the city airport, expressing Delhi’s readiness to welcome summit attendees.

She emphasised the continuous efforts of the MCD to maintain cleanliness in public spaces such as roads, parks, and markets, and noted the pride Delhi takes in hosting the G20 Summit. These identified garbage-prone spots are being beautified as part of the cleanup process.

Mayor Oberoi, accompanied by AAP’s MCD in-charge Durgesh Pathak, inspected preparations in Laxmi Nagar and Narayana Vihar earlier in the day.

The MCD, in collaboration with the public works department, is actively engaged in cleaning, beautifying, and renovating the city’s roads. Additionally, anti-larval spraying is being conducted in all of the city’s 250 wards, and 52 mechanical road-sweeping machines have been deployed.

Deputy Mayor Aaley Mohammad Iqbal noted that Ghalib ki Haveli in Ballimaran and Town Hall in Chandni Chowk are also prepared to welcome G20 delegates and tourists. Public urinals are being cleaned, and 35 prominent roads are being cleaned round the clock by the MCD. Over 250 employees have been assigned to clean specific areas, including Rajghat, Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, streets around Delhi Zoo, Bhairav Marg, Vikas Marg, and Tilak Marg.

Mayor Oberoi mentioned that 12,000 workers have been specially deployed to prepare Delhi for the G20 Summit, with 1,500 workers in the Central Zone, 1,000 in the South Zone, 1,500 in the Najafgarh Zone, and 250 workers around Pragati Maidan.

The statement also confirmed that around 12,000 garbage-prone points have been cleaned, temporary encroachments on roads have been removed, and three major drains around Pragati Maidan have been cleaned to prevent waterlogging during rains. Special dustbins have been strategically placed along main roads and near hotels to discourage littering. (With inputs from PTI)
