Indians now biggest chunk of foreign students in Canada

Lately, Canada has become an important centre of education for Indian students. As reported  by the Economic Times in March 2022, India has become the country with the largest number of students in Canada. 

Canada, in a record-breaking initiative, issued around 450,000 study permits in 2021, and out of these 217,410 were issued to Indian students. With this, India became the most beneficiated country followed by China with 105,265 out of a total of 622,000 international students.

On 5 September, East West Unisys is organising a Canadian Universities Education Fair from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm at the Vasant Vihar Club in New Delhi. 

University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Manitoba, Trent University, University of the Fraser Valley, Thompson Rivers University, University of Northern British Columbia, Acadia University, University of Brunswick, St. Francis Xavier University, Adler University, Macewan University, College of New Caledonia, Keyano College, Manitoba Institute of Trades & Technology, Columbia College, Memorial University – Grenfell, North Island College, Medical School, Flying School and Nursing School are going to be a part of this Universities Educational Fair.

Why Canada?

“Canada is an abode of opportunities for the students, in terms of jobs and studies as well”, states a professor presently teaching at the University of Toronto. 

“If we compare the education system of Canada to that of India, there are loopholes in the Indian system, the knowledge is very bookish in nature and the subjects are very conservatively designed, while in the Canadian system, the practicality of the subject is of utmost importance along with the research opportunities”, they state.

“The most important and attractive aspect of the universities in Canada is the learn and earn system. Canada provides the immigrant students with work opportunities of about 20 hours a week during semesters, which provides help and support to the students for their survival”, the professor adds.

Students perspective

Monica Kapahi, who went there as a student and is working in Canada, shared a similar opinion. “The health facilities are too good and affordable as a student, and you have plenty of work opportunities as well. Most of the Indian students are able to make their way through different part-time jobs with a good pay”, she states.

“I’ll say that Canada attracts a lot of Indian students because they are able to sustain themselves financially while continuing their studies”, concludes Monica.
