Colin De Grandhome, a hard-hitting all-rounder, has announced his retirement from international cricket on 31 August, Wednesday, just days before the upcoming 20 overs Cricket World Cup. The cricketer cited a rigorous schedule and injuries as the primary reasons behind his choice.

“I accept I’m not getting any younger and that the training is getting harder, particularly with the injuries”, he said in an official statement released by New Zealand Cricket.

“I also have a growing family and am trying to understand what my future looks like post-cricket. All of this has been in my mind over the past few weeks. I’ve been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to play for the Black Caps since debuting in 2012, and I’m proud of my international career – but I feel this is the right time to finish”, he added.

Colin De Grandhomme’s international career ended with an impressive record. The all-rounder played for the Black Caps in all three formats and was a regular in the playing eleven.

During his ten-year international career, he played 29 tests for his country and won 18 of them. The all-rounder scored 1,615 runs at an average of 32.95 per innings and holds the distinction of being the only bowler in test cricket history who was never hit for a six.

He was also crucial in the match of New Zealand versus India of the World Test Championship. The cricketer also excelled in different versions of the game and played 45 One Day International matches and 41 Twenty Twenty games. Apart from his performance on the ground, he was also very famous for his Mullet style, bringing back the essence of the era when the game started.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead paid a rich tribute to Grandhome. “Colin’s been a hugely influential part of the Black Caps and contributed to some of the team’s greatest achievements,” Stead said. “His immense power with the bat and skills with the ball made him a real match winner and an asset to any side.”

The Blackcaps cricketer was recently signed up for the Big Bash Draft by the Adelaide Strikers. Fans of the all-rounder also showered their love on social media.
