Kamaljeet Sehrawat, the BJP candidate from West Delhi, became the second woman to get elected to the Lok Sabha from the national capital on Tuesday.

Like Bansuri Swaraj, who also won for BJP from the New Delhi constituency, the former Mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) is also a first-timer at the national-level elections.

Kamaljeet sealed her victory with a margin of 1,88,724 votes, after securing 8,03,236 votes. Her opponent, Mahabal Mishra from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was able to secure only 6,14,512 votes.

The BJP candidate, besides serving as Mayor of SDMC, was also a member of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on multiple occasions.

Mishra, on the other hand, had served as West Delhi MP for Congress in 2009 during the UPA-II government led by Dr Manmohan Singh. Following a lull of over a decade, the veteran returned only to suffer a devastating defeat to the national politics debutante.

The residents of West Delhi had voted over issues like lack of parking, water scarcity, traffic congestion, regularisation of unauthorised colonies and more importantly crime.

West Delhi constituency had a total of 25,87, 977 voters, with 13,70, 398 male voters and 12,17, 448 female voters, besides 131 transgender voters.
