The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has written to Delhi Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar over videos of children allegedly getting drenched in the rain during preparation for a Delhi government event to make the biggest Tricolour ahead of Independence Day.

To celebrate 75 years of Independence, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had urged thousands of children to congregate in the capital on 4 August to create the “largest Tricolour in the world”. Over 50,000 children from various government schools were supposed to take part and gather at a ground in Burari. While they practiced on the ground on Wednesday, a message was sent to schools and teachers early Thursday morning that the event had been called off due to waterlogging and that children should not come.

According to a report by the Indian Express, Kanoongo said in the letter that Tiwari has attached videos of children experiencing “undue harassment”. The letter also alleged the programme was cancelled without any intimation and kids were left on their own to get wet in the rain, “which may be a hazard for their health”.

Tiwari said large-scale advertisements for the event were issued but adequate measures were not undertaken to protect the children from the rain. “CM Kejriwal, to gain popularity, is putting children’s lives at risk… it is a planned conspiracy in which the Delhi government education department also assisted them”, he alleged.

While the Delhi Government spokesperson declined to comment on the topic, a senior official said that the accusation was “frivolous”.

The official stated that each year, children go to the Red Fort to celebrate Independence Day. Many times, it rains while they are there. As soon as officials realized that the event could not take place at the venue, messages were sent out to schools. To say that schools were not informed and that children were abandoned is completely wrong.

The BJP has a problem with an event where children will make the biggest Tricolour, the official concluded.
