Following a series of controversial viral videos involving passengers, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)  has decided to increase patrolling at stations and inside trains. Uniformed security personnel and plain-clothes DMRC staff will now conduct patrols as part of the strengthened security measures.

The decision came after the emergence of a recent video on social media showing a couple kissing on the floor of a metro coach.

The DMRC issued an appeal to commuters, urging them to refrain from engaging in such “obscene activities.” Sources revealed that the DMRC had written to the Delhi Police, requesting intensified patrolling at stations and inside metro coaches to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

A senior DMRC official stated that the recent videos prompted the organisation to take steps to enhance security and surveillance.

He said that one of the measures being implemented includes patrolling by uniformed police personnel and DMRC staff in plain clothes within the trains.

Additionally, CCTV cameras are already installed in coaches on all lines, with the exception of some older trains on line one. However, these coaches are currently undergoing refurbishment, and CCTV cameras will be installed during this process. Furthermore, cameras will also be installed at metro stations to monitor any objectionable activities, he added.

The objective of these measures is to deter potential threats and inconvenience to passengers, particularly women, he further added.

The video of the couple kissing in the metro coach has sparked outrage among many social media users, who have called for action to be taken by the DMRC. Some individuals also questioned the act of filming such incidents.

In response to these concerns, the DMRC has urged commuters to report any similar incidents immediately to the nearest available metro staff or Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel so that appropriate action can be taken. The CISF is responsible for safeguarding the Delhi Metro premises and responding to any situation that arises within the coaches. Moreover, the Delhi Metro Rail Police is also present to address any untoward activities.

In the past, the DMRC has used its social media platforms to appeal to passengers, requesting them not to film videos or create reels that may cause inconvenience to fellow riders. The DMRC also operates a flying squad, which is active on a daily basis, to address any issues or incidents within the metro system.

The implementation of these enhanced security measures aims to maintain a safe and secure environment for passengers using the Delhi Metro. (With inputs from PTI)
