A 75-year-old retired IPS officer, who had a distinguished career in intelligence agencies, tragically lost his life after being struck by a train while crossing a closed railway track near Brar Square in the Delhi Cantonment area, authorities said on Saturday.

The incident occurred when Mohan Das Menon, a 1974-batch officer of the Indian Police Service renowned for his tenure in the Research and Analysis Wing (RA&W) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB), was in the vicinity for the funeral rites of an individual in the Delhi Cantonment area. Menon, a resident of South Delhi’s Panchsheel Park, observed the railway crossing closed at Brar Square, an official said.

According to Menon’s driver, upon noticing the closed crossing, he disembarked from the car and proceeded to cross the track on foot. Tragically, during this attempt, he was struck by an oncoming train and succumbed to the injuries sustained at the scene, as confirmed by the police.

“It is suspected that he might not have been aware of the approaching train,” an officer familiar with the investigation said, adding that Menon had served as an IPS officer in the Uttar Pradesh cadre. (With inputs from PTI)
