More than 3,100 people donated blood at a voluntary blood donation camp organised by the Laxmi Taru Foundation in Rohini, with ShardaCare – Healthcity serving as the healthcare partner, organisers said.
According to the organisers, around 10,000 people participated in the event, which they described as one of the country’s largest community-led voluntary blood donation drives. Around 250 non-governmental organisations and social groups, including Thalassemics India, Rotary Club, Lions Club and DATRI Foundation, supported the initiative.
Dr Harprit Singh, Head of Transfusion Medicine and Blood Bank at ShardaCare – Healthcity, said voluntary blood donors play a crucial role in maintaining adequate blood supplies for hospitals.
“Every unit of blood donated has the potential to save multiple lives. Blood cannot be manufactured and voluntary donors remain the backbone of every healthcare system,” he said, adding that such drives help hospitals remain prepared for emergencies and patients requiring life-saving transfusions.
Dr Pawan Kumar Singh, Vice Chairman of Haemato-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant at the hospital, said patients undergoing bone marrow transplants and those suffering from blood disorders often require repeated blood and platelet transfusions.
“A strong culture of voluntary blood donation directly translates into better outcomes and renewed hope for these patients and their families,” he said.
Dr Kousar Shah, Group CEO of ShardaCare – Healthcity and Sharda Hospital, said healthcare institutions have a responsibility to promote community health beyond hospital premises and appreciated the Laxmi Taru Foundation for organising the initiative.
As part of the drive, complimentary ISI-marked helmets were distributed to blood donors to promote road safety awareness alongside voluntary blood donation.
