A request was made by the Delhi government urging Haryana to allow only BS-VI-compliant buses to enter the city from 1 October 2022 to control the air pollution.

Haryana and other neighboring states contribute majorly to Delhi’s air pollution, the officials indicated.

The situation attracted the attention of the Supreme Court and the Commission of Air Quality Management in Delhi and NCR (CAQM), said Delhi’s Transport Special Commissioner OP Mishra in a letter to Haryana Transport Department Principal Secretary Navdeep Singh Virk on 15 June.

According to the Supreme Court, only BS-VI compliant vehicles are permitted to be sold or registered, the letter said. As per National Green Tribunal, diesel vehicles more than 10 years old will not be allowed to ply in the NCR.

The letter also stated that the public transport in Delhi is completely CNG-run and the buses plying from other states run on diesel. In order to achieve tangible results to control pollution, the neighboring states need to cooperate.
