Visibility improves in Delhi, minimum temperature settles at 10.7 degree Celsius

Following two consecutive days of dense to very dense fog, significant improvement in visibility was observed across many parts of Delhi on Friday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that most of the fog transformed into low clouds.

In the early hours of the day, Delhi experienced dense to moderate fog conditions in isolated pockets.

The IMD attributed the improved visibility to the breaking of the inversion layer on Friday morning. This contrasted with the weather conditions observed from December 25 to 28, indicating a weakening of the lower-level stable boundary layer.

Reportedly, visibility measured 200 metres at Safdarjung, Delhi’s primary weather station, and 50 metres at Palam.

Foggy conditions continued to impact train services for the third consecutive day, leading to delays in 11 Delhi-bound trains.

The IMD noted a significant improvement in fog conditions at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Friday. The lowest visibility recorded was 150 metres in dense fog.

Runway Visual Ranges (RVRs) now range from 400 to 800 metres, signaling improved aviation conditions, according to the IMD.

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 10.7 degrees Celsius, which is four notches above the season’s average, according to the weather department. The relative humidity stood at 95 per cent at 8:30 am.

The Delhi Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 332, falling within the ‘very poor’ category at 8 am. (With inputs from PTI)
