A 64-year-old woman lost her life, and a man sustained injuries after being struck by a car in southwest Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area on Sunday morning, according to officials.

The police received information about the incident around 6:00 AM and responded promptly, an official stated.

Upon arrival, officers found that the injured individuals had already been taken to nearby hospitals, the official added.

“Kamlesh, a resident of Gupta Enclave, was admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital, while an unidentified man in his 70s was taken to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital,” the officer reported.

An eyewitness revealed that the victims were crossing the road near Uttam Nagar Terminal when a vehicle, allegedly being driven recklessly, struck them.

The vehicle, approaching from the Janakpuri side, fled the scene immediately following the accident, the eyewitness added.

Kamlesh succumbed to her injuries during treatment, while the unidentified man remains hospitalised in critical condition.

“We reviewed CCTV footage, which helped identify the vehicle involved, and efforts are underway to register a case under the appropriate sections,” the officer stated.

The woman’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and further investigation is ongoing, the official confirmed.

Meanwhile, Delhi has recorded a staggering toll of 1,200 fatal road accidents up to October 31 this year, averaging four deaths daily, according to data accessed by Patriot. This marks a troubling increase, with the total number of road fatalities nearing the 1,257 deaths recorded across the entire year of 2023, as outlined in the Delhi Police’s Road Crash Fatalities Report, 2023.

A senior police official highlighted that these accidents mostly occur during nighttime when traffic is sparse. “It is not a matter of what festival is happening across Delhi. It is more important to note why these deaths are happening seemingly on a daily basis. Most of these accidents happen on regular working days, without any festivities as such,” he said.

The report identified pedestrians as the most vulnerable road users, while two-wheelers comprised the next most vulnerable category, accounting for 43% and 38% of the total fatalities, respectively, in 2023. The Delhi Traffic Police department primarily attributes these accidents to overspeeding, with other factors including drunk driving and a general disregard for traffic rules.

“We have tried to make people understand that the motive should be to drive safely and to reach their destination without endangering others. We have conducted multiple awareness drives as well to help them realise. However, most of it falls on deaf ears. If a person does not want to be educated, then nobody can force him to,” said Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Kime Kaming.
