NDMC deploys anti-smog guns, sweeping machines to curb air pollution in Delhi

In response to changing weather conditions in the city, the NDMC has implemented a series of measures to combat pollution. New Delhi Municipal Council Vice Chairperson Satish Upadhyay recently unveiled a comprehensive plan for “Air Pollution Control” in 2023-24, emphasising the immediate need to prioritize environmental well-being.

He highlighted the detrimental effects of air pollution on public health, including respiratory diseases, heart conditions, and cancer. Upadhyay announced the deployment of mechanical road sweepers, with seven machines covering a sweeping distance of 280-330 kilometers between April 1 and October 26. These sweepers operate in two shifts with GPS tracking and wet sweeping.

Furthermore, the NDMC ensures daily or alternate-day mechanical cleaning of all avenue roads, monitored in real-time at the Smart City Integrated Command and Control Centre. Central verges and side berms in the NDMC area have been green-paved, and the horticulture department has successfully planted 3,200 trees and 33,12,885 shrubs, achieving its target for 2023-24.

To address pollution, the NDMC has procured one operational anti-smog gun on Mahadev Road and is in the process of hiring eight more. Additionally, 18 water tankers or trolleys, using STP-treated water, are deployed to water plants, with capacities ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 liters. The NDMC has also formed a team to inspect construction sites, leading to the issuance of 25 challans worth Rs 12.50 lakh from April 1 to October 27 for dust mitigation violations.

The NDMC is proactive in managing construction and demolition waste, collecting 70 metric tonnes per day, which is sent to the Shastri Park C&D recycling plant. Fourteen sites are designated for waste collection, and stringent measures are in place to prevent unauthorized dumping.

The civic body has deployed three teams of field officers from health, horticulture, and civil departments for regular inspections, including nighttime monitoring. Furthermore, 14 teams from the health department conduct daytime inspections related to waste burning.

In an effort to promote cleaner transportation, the NDMC has acquired 32 electric cars and five electric bikes. Moreover, 100 Electric Vehicle public charging stations have been installed, with 67 already commissioned in the NDMC area. The remaining 33 stations will be operational soon, according to Upadhyay.
