In a remarkable case of swift medical intervention and surgical precision, doctors in Gurgaon successfully replanted the near-total amputated right thumb of a 13-year-old boy who was injured in a kutti machine (chaff cutter) accident, restoring both viability and hope for functional recovery.

The boy was brought to the hospital in a critical condition with a near-total amputation of his right thumb. Recognising the urgency, the medical team immediately shifted him to the operation theatre to undertake emergency replantation surgery.

The complex microsurgical procedure involved multiple stages, including bony fixation, arterial repair, nerve coaptation, and tendon reconstruction. The aim was not only to reattach the thumb structurally but also to restore its functional capability, which is crucial for hand movement and grip.

The surgery was led by Dr Pradeep Kumar Singh, Head of Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery at Artemis Hospitals. Emphasising the importance of rapid response, he said that timely transportation and immediate surgical management were key factors in saving the thumb.

“Replantation is a delicate procedure that requires precise repair of bones, blood vessels, nerves, and tendons. In this case, early intervention played a critical role. We are pleased with the outcome and optimistic about the child regaining good functional use of his thumb,” Dr Singh said.

Following surgery and post-operative care, the patient showed excellent recovery. At the time of discharge, the replanted thumb demonstrated good viability, marking a positive outcome in what was a highly challenging case.

Doctors noted that such cases underline the importance of prompt medical attention and access to advanced surgical care, particularly in traumatic limb injuries involving children, where timely action can make the difference between permanent disability and full recovery.
