Self at the centre

What: Inspired by Gandhi’s seminal anti-imperialist text Hind Swaraj written in 1909, here’s an exhibition that examines elements of Gandhi’s critique of modern civilisation, noting his emphasis on an evolved ethical and spiritual self for creating an alternative perspective of a better world.

Titled ‘Bound by Duty: An Idea of Swaraj and Collectiveness’ the show follows the idea that to bring social revolutions for creating peaceful societies, the idea of self-rule or self-control needs to be experienced uniquely by each individual, and ultimately achieving self-transformation.

Artist Shelly Jyoti is inspired by the micro-organisms in water, such as trillions of tiny fishes collaborating together, displacing water to create oceanic currents, waves and turbulence in undersea environment. She examines the idea of ‘collectiveness’ and ‘collective impact’ that can bring about social change with evolved and spiritually self-aware communities.

Setting the stage

What: Showcasing more than 120 artworks created by 55 upcoming artists and Diploma students from the age of 8 to 70 years, the National Institute of Fine Arts is back with their 14th annual art exhibition. Titled ‘Urge’ it means a desire — the urge of expression compels an artist to create any and everything which is a tangible manifestation of his insides – his thoughts, his feelings. With an aim to give students a wide platform and exposure this exhibition is all about the collections of paintings done by the students which show the various facets of Indian mythology, religious thoughts, vintage theme, culture, life, nature, etc. According to Renu Khera, the curator of the show and Director of NIFA, this exhibition brings into light some of the upcoming talents with a vision of bringing art beyond boundaries.

Tribute to Tom

What: To commemorate the second death anniversary of Tom Alter, Pierrot’s Troupe is all set to stage their production Sons of Babur. Alter played the lead in all of its 51 shows before his demise. This show will have Tom Alter’s part – Bahadur Shah Zafar – being screened and the rest of the play being staged. A play on the era and aura of the Mughals, it is a highly enriching account of the worlds of Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb, laid open to the audience from far-off Rangoon by the last, deposed Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar.
