Delhi: 68th edition of dance drama ‘Shri Ram’ begins

The 68th edition of Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra’s Shri Ram has kicked off in New Delhi, running from October 3 to 26. This annual production, staged at the Kendra Lawns on Copernicus Marg, is a much-anticipated retelling of the Ramayana, featuring a mix of classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam and folk traditions such as Mayurbhanj Chau. The performances begin at 6:30 PM daily.

The two-hour-fifteen-minute show depicts Lord Ram’s life, from his birth to his coronation. Under the direction of Padmashri Shobha Deepak Singh, daughter of the Kendra’s founder, the production evolves each year while staying true to its traditional roots.

“Shri Ram serves as a bridge between generations. It’s not just about retelling the Ramayana but making its message relevant today,” said Singh, reflecting on the show’s evolving choreography and stagecraft.

First staged in 1957, Shri Ram has grown under Singh’s leadership, with new music, voice-overs, and visually impressive sets and costumes. Singh said, “We aim to resonate with both older generations who are familiar with the Ramayana and younger audiences who are discovering its values for the first time.”

The production has earned international recognition, having toured over 35 countries, and it continues to attract global acclaim. “To see Shri Ram appreciated internationally underscores the universal relevance of this epic,” Singh added.

With its timeless narrative, Shri Ram addresses values like duty and morality, which remain applicable to modern society. “The lessons of the Ramayana still offer guidance in today’s world,” Singh further added.
