An exhibition titled Echoes of Past and Future, bringing together works of Indian modern and contemporary artists, will open at Divine Art Gallery on April 24. The show features paintings, drawings and sculptures that place diverse artistic practices from different periods in dialogue with one another.

The exhibition includes works by leading modernists such as SH Raza, Ram Kumar, FN Souza, Krishen Khanna and A Ramachandran, alongside figures like Anjolie Ela Menon, Manu Parekh and Himmat Shah. It also presents selected works by senior contemporary artists including Yusuf Arakkal and Ashok Bhowmick.

The show spans a wide range of styles and approaches, allowing viewers to encounter both historical and contemporary expressions side by side. While Menon’s works present introspective, meditative figures, Parekh’s paintings are marked by vibrant colour and expressive energy. Sculptural works by Shah introduce a tactile dimension, emphasising materiality and form within the exhibition space.

Across mediums and generations, the exhibition highlights how Indian art has evolved while retaining connections to earlier visual languages. The juxtaposition of works creates a layered viewing experience, where shifts in technique, theme and artistic intent become visible.

Speaking about the exhibition, gallery founder Sumit Thakur said it brings together “some of the most prominent voices in Indian modern and contemporary art,” creating a dialogue that reflects both continuity and change in artistic expression.

The exhibition offers an overview of how artists across generations have responded to their contexts, while also pointing towards emerging directions in contemporary practice.

When: April 24 to May 10; 11 AM to 7 PM

Where: Divine Art Gallery, F-213A, Old M.B. Road, Lado Sarai, New Delhi
