‘Echoes of the Hand’: a solo exhibition by Gaurab Das

A solo exhibition titled Echoes of the Hand, presenting new sculptures by Santiniketan-based artist Gaurab Das, will open at Black Cube Gallery, on January 30. The exhibition brings together works in bronze, wood and stone that explore material memory, gesture and the quiet relationships between human, animal and landscape.

On view until February 20, the exhibition can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday, between 12 PM and 6 PM. Das’s sculptural practice is rooted in tactile engagement with form, shaped by clay as his first medium in childhood and carried forward into fluid, abstract compositions that resist literal interpretation.

The works move between the human, the animal and the elemental, with recurring themes of connection—mother and child, buffalo and land, body and nature. These forms emerge gradually through rhythm, contour and surface, inviting slow looking and contemplation rather than immediate recognition.

Trained at Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, Das draws from the institution’s legacy of contextual modernism, emphasising materiality, craft and an empathetic engagement with the living world. In contrast to an art landscape increasingly shaped by speed and digital abstraction, his sculptures offer a grounded, sensorial counterpoint where form becomes a vessel for emotion and presence.

Born in Bangladesh in 1992, Gaurab Das grew up in an environment where art was woven into everyday life, influenced early on by his father’s painting practice and by local idol makers in his village. After graduating from Khulna Art College, he moved to India in 2012 to study sculpture at Kala Bhavana, completing his DFA in 2016 and ADFA in 2018. He has since established his practice in Santiniketan.

Das has received international recognition, including the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant in 2019. His first solo exhibition was held at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, and he has participated in several group exhibitions across India and Bangladesh.
