Classic and contemporary

What: Looking back to move forward, here’s a festival that explores the continuity and change in classical dance —‘Manasa: Art Without Frontiers’. The exhibition by Sharon Lowen, well-known Odissi dancer and guru, will display never-seen-before photographs of classical and folk dancers, taken in 1973-78 and 1981-90 in Delhi, Kolkata, Imphal, Seraikella and Baripada. Odissi recitals, choreographic premiers by young classical
dancers and discussions on the transmission of traditions, will be the highlights of the
festival.
When: July 25- 29
Where: India International Centre, Lodhi Gardens

Japanese posters

What: Bringing together the work of 15 Japanese designers, The Japan Foundation (Delhi) is presenting an exhibition on contemporary posters. Known as Bubble Economy in Japan, the period 1980-90 was extremely good for business. As various enterprises invested a lot of money on advertising and publicity, graphic designers got the chance to experiment with different kinds of designs. As signs of globalisation started becoming visible, the country saw an increase in awareness towards environmental problems, leading to the creation of a number of posters for international meetings and expositions influenced by these developments.
These posters in bright colours reflect such developments in their society.
When: June 22- July 21 (11 am -7 pm)
Where: The Japan Foundation, Ring Road, Lajpat Nagar

Keeping it alive

What: Traditional artworks of women artists of North Jharkhand are vanishing from the walls of village mud houses. While Khovar or comb-cut art is done during the marriage season using reversed slip pottery technique, Sohrai is a winter harvest art, painted as a thanksgiving ritual for a good harvest. Two women artists, Parvati Devi, Sohrai artist from Bhelwara village; and Malo Devi, Khovar artist from Jorakath village, will present a live demonstration.
When: July 25 – August 4 (11 am – 7 pm)
Where: India International Centre, Lodhi Gardens

Friendship Across the border

What: Can friendship survive through the tension at the border? A drama packed with comedy and satire, ‘Kya Dilli Kya Lahore’ will narrate an unimaginable story of friendship between an Indian and a Pakistani soldier. Portraying their hardships through their journey, the play tells the audience that despite rivalries the two nations are quite similar, sharing a common history. But as the war takes over, will their friendship be strong enough to not pull the trigger?
When: July 21 (7:30 pm)
Where: LTG Auditorium, Copernicus Marg, Mandi House
