Delhi: To attract visitors during the night hours, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) may soon launch a light and sound show at the historic Purana Qila.

An ASI official in the Delhi circle informed Patriot that the organisation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Tourism to initiate the project. “Trial runs for the show at the protected heritage structure have been conducted. We are waiting for final approval from the Ministry, after which the light and sound show will begin at the monument,” the official said.

The project is being carried out by the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) under the Union Tourism Ministry in collaboration with the ASI.

Aim to boost night tourism

The initiative aims to enhance night tourism at Purana Qila, similar to other prominent monuments in the national capital. “This will surely draw both local and foreign visitors to the site,” the official added.

ASI is currently promoting night tourism at various monuments across Delhi, focusing on illumination, light and sound shows, and cultural events.

The Red Fort’s light and sound show, launched in 2018, offers a captivating cultural experience that brings the fort’s rich history to life. Using advanced lighting and sound technology, the show narrates the story of the fort, highlighting its architectural grandeur and the significant events that unfolded within its walls. Similarly, the Qutub Minar’s show combines lights, sound effects, and narration to showcase the monument’s history and architectural significance.

Additionally, ASI has extended the visiting hours for Humayun’s Tomb, which is now open till 9 PM, allowing visitors to enjoy the site’s architectural beauty under the evening sky.

A rich legacy awaits revival

While Purana Qila has previously hosted several musical shows at night, visitors have expressed a desire for a more consistent effort to promote night tourism. “ASI is working to make it a regular event,” the official said.

Currently, Purana Qila is open to visitors from sunrise to sunset only. To further boost tourism, the 16th-century monument is also preparing to reintroduce boating, offering a fresh experience for both locals and tourists. This initiative is being undertaken by the Sabhyata Foundation, a part of the Dalmia Bharat Group, which adopted the monument under the government’s Adopt a Heritage 2.0 programme, in collaboration with ASI.

A Bollywood favourite

Purana Qila’s historic charm has also made it a popular location for Bollywood films, with notable appearances in Chak De! India (starring Shah Rukh Khan), Tanu Weds Manu Returns (featuring Kangana Ranaut), and Jannat 2.

The monument attracts around two lakh visitors annually, which is relatively low compared to other monuments like the Red Fort and Qutub Minar, which see up to twenty-five lakh visitors.
