Is Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli retiring? Gambhir responds diplomatically

India’s cricket team is undergoing a significant transition, as confirmed by head coach Gautam Gambhir. After Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement, Washington Sundar has taken his place in the Test squad. However, the spotlight remains on three players aged 35 or older: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Jadeja’s Position Seems Secure

Among the senior players, Ravindra Jadeja is not under scrutiny. While his bowling against Australia drew some criticism, his consistent batting performances down the order have proven invaluable. As Inside Sport Reports indicate that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held discussions with Rohit Sharma post-Melbourne Test and plans to speak with Kohli after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. Jadeja’s name, however, has not been part of these discussions.

Rohit and Kohli’s Future in Test Cricket

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s performances have sparked debates about their place in the Test team. Rohit, despite being captain, chose to sit out the Sydney Test, while Kohli played all five matches of the series. Although neither has expressed intentions to retire, selectors may consider transitioning beyond them. Gambhir, addressing these concerns after India’s 3-1 series loss to Australia, stated, “They still have the hunger and passion. Whatever they decide will be in the best interest of Indian cricket.”

Selection Dilemma for England Test Series

India’s next Test series, against England, is set for June-August. With no red-ball matches scheduled until then, assessing Rohit and Kohli’s suitability for the squad will be difficult. Their absence from domestic red-ball cricket adds complexity to the decision-making process. Gambhir commented, “We have five months to plan. It’s too early to decide, as form and circumstances can change.”

For now, India balances preparing for the future with respecting its senior players’ contributions.
