Maruti Suzuki set to shake up SUV market with new car launch

Maruti Suzuki is preparing to introduce a new mid-size SUV on September 3, which is expected to be manufactured at the company’s Kharkhoda facility in Haryana. Initially thought to be a facelifted Grand Vitara, fresh reports confirm that this will be an entirely new model carrying a different nameplate. The automaker has reportedly filed a trademark for the moniker “Escudo”, making it the likely badge for this new SUV. Unlike the Grand Vitara, which is sold via Nexa, this upcoming model will be retailed through Arena dealerships and will serve as the flagship offering in the Arena portfolio.

Design Expectations

Spy shots of camouflaged prototypes have revealed an overall silhouette and size similar to the Grand Vitara, though with distinct styling cues. The front and rear fascias appear to feature redesigned elements, including fresh headlamp and taillamp units. These lighting elements draw inspiration from the e-Vitara concept. A revised alloy wheel design is also anticipated, giving the SUV a more modern stance.

Interiors and Features

Inside, the SUV is expected to come with a completely revamped dashboard layout, highlighted by a larger flat touchscreen infotainment display and a fully digital instrument cluster. Chrome detailing around the AC vents will likely enhance its premium appeal. Contrary to speculation about a three-row option, this SUV will be a five-seater.

Feature highlights may include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, ambient lighting, automatic climate control, an electric sunroof, and a 360-degree camera system. On the safety front, the SUV is likely to offer six airbags, electronic stability programme (ESP), ABS with EBD, and cruise control.

Engine and Powertrain

The SUV will be based on Maruti’s Global C platform, shared with the Brezza and Grand Vitara. It is expected to carry forward the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 103 bhp and 137 Nm of torque, paired with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. A CNG variant of the same engine is also on the cards, delivering 87 bhp. While a strong hybrid option seems unlikely at launch, Maruti may explore it later depending on market response.

With its refreshed design, modern interiors, and feature-rich package, this upcoming SUV—likely to be called Escudo—is poised to strengthen Maruti Suzuki’s position in the competitive mid-size SUV space. Its launch will mark a significant addition to the company’s Arena lineup.
