In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday. The agreement follows what he described as a “long night” of negotiations mediated by the United States.

Posting on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated: “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Minutes after his post Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri while addressing press conference confirmed that India had agreed to a ceasefire after Pakistan reached out to India.

Misri confirmed that the ceasefire was initiated by a call from the Pakistani Director General of Military Operations at 15:35 IST. “It was agreed between them that both sides will stop firing and military action on land, air, and sea from 17:00 hrs IST today,” Misri said. The two DGMOs will speak again on May 12 at noon.

The ceasefire understanding was also confirmed by India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who also acknowledged that both nations had worked out a plan to halt firing and military operations along the border.

“India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action,” Jaishankar said in a social media post on Saturday.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has also confirmed Pakistan’s ceasefire with India in a post on X.

“Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect,” he said.

The minister added: “Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says India and Pakistan “have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site”.

In a post on X, he adds: “We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.”

He says that he and JD Vance spent the past 48 hours with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif.

The announcement marks a rare moment of conciliation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, whose relationship has often been fraught with tension and conflict.
