India’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic continues as the country recorded 6,155 new cases on Saturday, with the number of active cases rising to 31,194, according to the Union Health Ministry’s latest data.

The country’s total COVID-19 tally now stands at 4.47 crore (4,47,51,259), with a death toll of 5,30,954. The active cases make up only 0.07 per cent of the total infections, and the country’s COVID-19 recovery rate remains high at 98.74 per cent.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a persistent challenge for India, with a sharp surge in cases and deaths in the second wave earlier this year. The country has since ramped up its vaccination efforts, with over 220 crore doses administered so far under the nationwide vaccination drive.

However, the virus continues to spread in certain regions, with Delhi seeing its highest COVID-19 tally in over seven months. On Friday, the national capital recorded 733 fresh COVID-19 cases, with a positivity rate of 19.93 per cent. Two more COVID-positive patients died in the city, but their cases were incidental to COVID-19, according to the health bulletin.

The rise in cases in Delhi has been a cause for concern, with the city recording a positivity rate of 26.54 per cent on Wednesday, the highest in nearly 15 months, with 509 new cases. In January last year, the positivity rate had touched the 30-per cent mark.

Despite the recent surge in cases, the Delhi government has stated that there is no need to panic, with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urging people to follow COVID-19 protocols and get vaccinated. The city has also increased its testing efforts, with 3,678 COVID-19 tests conducted on Thursday.

The country’s overall COVID-19 situation remains stable, with a low daily positivity rate and a high recovery rate. However, officials have warned against complacency and urged people to continue following COVID-19 protocols, including wearing masks and practicing social distancing, to prevent a third wave of infections.
