Virasat, designed and directed by Sajida Saji is the Hindi translation of Mahesh Elkunchar’s Marathi play Wade ki Chirewandi. It is a depiction of the falling of feudal families in parts of rural India.
The story deals with the four generations of a Deshpande family in Vidarbha, still living in a wada, which is in a dilapidated condition.
The first generation is Dadi, who keeps on wailing for her dead son Venkatesh. Tatyaji and Amma represent the second generation. The third generation comprises Bhaskar, Sudhir, Chandu and Prabha with their daughters-in-law. Parag, Ranju and Abhay are of the fourth generation. First two-generation had enjoyed the glory of the mansion while the next two only heard about it.
The play opens with the information that Tatyaji had died three days ago and the family is mourning, each one in their own way. Sudhir lives in Mumbai and is yet to arrive. Bhaskar has already taken the charge of the mansion and being head of the family, is busy in snatching other’s share. He steals all the family gold immediately after his father’s death. Sudhir’s arrival with his wife Anjali brings suspicion in Bhaskar’s mind about his brother’s social and economic status in Mumbai.
