Spinner Waghela takes five and batsman Rana scores twin fifties as Delhi take first innings lead and finish second in their group

Delhi took points on first innings lead against Uttar Pradesh to end second in Group D in Cooch Behar (U-19) cricket, at the Ferozeshah Kotla grounds of the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The result helped the host qualify for the pre-quarterfinals.

The Hardik Sharma-led Delhi side won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 330 runs in their first innings. Half-centuries from opener Arpit Rana (57), Tarun Bisht (52) and wicketkeeper-batsman Krish Yadav (77) took the home side to a respectable first innings total.

For Uttar Pradesh, Shivam Ujjwal (3/39) and Kartik Yadav (3/72) were the top wicket-takers.

Though the Delhi bowlers began well and picked three wickets with total on 48, Uttar Pradesh batsmen Deepak Rajput (63) and Prashant Veer (56) managed to cobble a decent partnership.

It looked as if both batsmen would make a century partnership.

However, left-arm spinner Rounak Waghela spoiled their plan. He removed both the batsmen along with two others in the space of seven overs to leave UP on the mat.

From 136/3, UP were reduced to 155/7. Four wickets for 19 runs put Delhi in the driver’s seat. Tailender Naman Tiwari scored 71 off 94 balls to help UP put up resistance, but eventually they fell short by 56 runs, collapsing for 274.

Waghela finished with 5/74.

The home side ensured that UP had no chance of coming back when it made 320 in the second innings. Rana was again among runs, scoring 71 while Ankit Kumar hit 119.

Chasing a target of 377, UP faced an uphill task. They went for runs in the 12 overs they batted, scoring 75/2 before the match ended.

Delhi, who finished with three wins and 24 points from five matches, play Punjab in the pre-quarterfinal from December 10.
