The national capital witnessed a significant surge in cybercrime incidents in 2022, nearly doubling compared to the previous year, as per the latest data disclosed by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
The figures revealed an escalation from 345 cases in 2021 to 685 cases in 2022, marking a notable increase. In contrast, the count stood at a substantially lower 166 cybercrime cases in 2020, as highlighted by the comprehensive crime data for 2022.
A senior official from the Delhi Police said, “Our continuous efforts in fostering cyber awareness are reflected through various ongoing campaigns.”
Simultaneously, the report from the National Crime Records Bureau showcased a 4% rise in registered cases of crimes against women in India, reaching 445,256 in 2022, compared to 428,278 in 2021. In metropolitan cities with populations exceeding two million, the surge in such crimes was even more pronounced, escalating by 12.3% to 48,755 incidents in 2022.
Among the Union Territories, Delhi reported the highest number of crimes against women at 14,247, although slightly lower than the 14,277 cases in 2021. Nevertheless, these numbers were notably higher than the 10,093 cases recorded in 2020.
Delhi City topped the list among metropolitan areas, reporting the highest number of crimes against women at 14,158, significantly surpassing Mumbai’s 6,176 cases and Bengaluru’s 3,924 cases.
Curiously, Jaipur exhibited the highest rate of total crimes against women per 100,000 women among all metro cities. The report indicated 239.3 cases of crimes against women per 100,000 women in Jaipur in 2022, followed by 186.9 in Delhi and 174.3 in Indore. (With inputs from PTI)
