An elderly couple lost their lives, and their 45-year-old son was injured when the roof of their house in Delhi’s Rohini, Prem Nagar, collapsed, according to fire services officials on Wednesday.
The fire department received a call about the roof collapse around 3 a.m.
“We dispatched three fire tenders and a rescue team to the location immediately. Three people were rescued from the debris and taken to a nearby hospital,” a Delhi Fire Services official said.
Doctors confirmed the deaths of Sukhran (85) and his wife Gayatri Devi (75), while their son Vinod sustained injuries, the official added.
“Vinod is being treated at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital. We have notified the local police,” he further mentioned.
The police reported receiving a call at Prem Nagar police station at approximately 2:57 a.m. about the casualties resulting from the roof collapse.
Local police arrived at the scene promptly and discovered three injured individuals. They were transported to a hospital where two were pronounced dead. Vinod, the couple’s son, was released after receiving medical attention, according to a senior officer.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the roof of the ageing house gave way during the night while the family was asleep inside.
“The bodies have been returned to their relatives following post-mortem examinations. No signs of foul play were detected. Legal proceedings have been initiated,” the officer said. (With inputs from PTI)
