Delhi Police to procure over 300 red light, over speed violation detection cameras

A total of 831 fatal accidents took place this year till August 15, which is an increase of 4.01 per cent from 2023, during which 799 accidents in the same period were fatal

The Delhi Traffic Police is set to acquire more than 300 cameras for detecting red light violations (RLVD) and overspeeding (OSVD) to be installed at key locations across the city, officials said.

A senior officer revealed that 203 RLVD cameras will be deployed at 57 intersections, while 125 OSVD cameras will be placed at 76 sites.

Officials said that the tender for the second phase of camera procurement has been opened, with the project expected to cost approximately Rs 95 crore.

The RLVD cameras are slated for installation in the interior areas of Delhi, where red light violations are frequent. The traffic police officer said that the presence of these cameras is expected to curb such violations.

In contrast, the OSVD cameras will be placed on the outskirts of the city, where roads are less congested. These cameras will also cover locations where vehicles are commonly driven at high speeds, such as flyovers, the officer added.

Currently, Delhi is equipped with 209 RLVD cameras at 43 junctions and 125 OSVD cameras at 66 locations, all installed during phase 1, according to another officer.

Officials highlighted that the strategic use of OSVD cameras has been instrumental in monitoring and controlling vehicle speeds, thereby contributing to safer road conditions for all commuters.

Recent data indicates a 4% increase in road accident fatalities compared to last year as of August 15, while the number of non-fatal accidents has decreased by 1% this year.
