The Delhi High Court, on December 5, 2023, ordered Delhi govt to increase the EWS income limit from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh

Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena

Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Vinai Kumar Saxena has given approval to raise the annual income threshold for students to qualify for admission in private schools under the EWS quota, increasing it from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, according to a Raj Niwas notification released on Monday.

This change will benefit a much larger group of students whose parents fall under the economically weaker section (EWS) category.

The Delhi High Court, in its order on December 5, 2023, directed the Delhi government to raise the threshold from the current Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.

“However, in late October, the Delhi government, through the chief minister, submitted a proposal to increase the limit to only Rs 2.5 lakh. While approving this proposal, the LG strongly recommended that the chief minister reconsider this threshold and raise it to at least Rs 5 lakh,” the notification stated.

Subsequently, on November 13, the High Court noted that its previous orders had not been complied with, the notification added.

As a result, the Delhi government was forced to revise the threshold limit once again, increasing it from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, and send it to the LG for approval on Monday.
