Congress MP from Mayiladuthurai, Sudha Ramakrishnan, was robbed of her gold chain while out on a morning walk in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri area on Monday, prompting her to write to the Union Home Ministry seeking swift action and enhanced security in the diplomatic enclave.

The incident occurred around 6.15 AM near the Polish Embassy’s Gate-3 and Gate-4, when a man wearing a full-face helmet and riding a Scooty approached the MP from the opposite direction and snatched her gold chain before fleeing the scene, Sudha said in her complaint.

She was accompanied by Rajya Sabha MP Rajathi at the time of the incident. The accused reportedly tugged at her chain with such force that it caused injuries to her neck and tore her dress.

“A while later, we spotted a mobile patrol vehicle of the Delhi Police and approached them for help. We were asked to file a written complaint at the local police station,” she stated in the letter to the Home Ministry.

Expressing deep concern over safety in the capital, she wrote: “If a woman cannot walk safely in this high-priority zone in the national capital of India, where else can we feel safe and do our routine without fearing for our limbs, lives and valuables?”

The MP, who is staying at Tamil Nadu Bhavan, said the stolen chain weighed over four sovereigns and the incident had left her “highly traumatised.”

“I request your good self to direct the authorities to ensure the culprit is tracked using the many CCTV cameras installed in this high-security area,” she added.

Chanakyapuri is home to several foreign embassies and government residences. Following the incident, Delhi Police registered a case and launched an investigation.

“Multiple teams have been formed to trace the accused. CCTV footage from the area is being examined and eyewitnesses are being questioned,” a senior police officer said. Security in and around Tamil Nadu Bhavan and adjoining roads has also been increased, officials added.
