The victim, yet to be identified, was on duty when a speeding vehicle struck his scooter on Nelson Mandela Marg

A delivery boy lost his life on Monday morning after a speeding vehicle rammed into his scooter on Nelson Mandela Marg in southwest Delhi, police said. The incident took place near the Vasant Kunj area and was reported to the local police station shortly after it occurred.

“The investigating officer is currently at the scene,” a senior officer from Vasant Kunj North police station said. “Further action will be taken once the medico-legal case (MLC) report is received from the hospital.”

The identity of the victim and the vehicle involved had not been confirmed at the time of reporting. Police said a case will be registered under appropriate legal sections once preliminary inquiries are completed.

The fatal accident comes amid a worrying uptick in road mishaps across the city during the current monsoon season. According to data from the Delhi Traffic Police, the capital recorded 1,160 accidents between May 1 and July 15, 2025—21 more than the 1,128 incidents during the same period last year.

While injury-related accidents rose by over 7 per cent (from 1,046 to 1,128), non-injury accidents declined, indicating that more recent crashes have been more severe. Notably, fatal accidents have seen a drop—from 311 in 2024 to 271 this year.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Kime Kaming attributed the spike in injuries to deteriorating road conditions. “We’ve repeatedly asked civic bodies to address the poor infrastructure, especially waterlogging,” he said. “But there’s been little to no action. Motorcyclists and pedestrians are the most vulnerable in these conditions.”

Authorities are urging commuters to exercise caution, particularly in areas prone to water accumulation and poor visibility during the rainy season.
