The Delhi government has announced plans to introduce a new policy aimed at streamlining the licensing process for cloud kitchens. In a bid to enhance transparency and public involvement, the government intends to release a White Paper that will incorporate suggestions from citizens and entrepreneurs.
The Independent Food Outlets (Cloud Kitchen) Policy, discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and attended by Industries Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, aims to facilitate the round-the-clock operation of independent food outlets. Notably, food outlets smaller than 250 square feet will be exempt from obtaining a license.
To support businesses in this sector, a state-level banking committee will be established to provide financial assistance. The policy covers various types of independent food outlets, including cloud kitchens, ghost kitchens, dark kitchens, base kitchens, satellite kitchens, and virtual kitchens. These outlets typically range in size from 600 square feet to 2,000 square feet.
Kejriwal emphasised the importance of generating employment opportunities through the regulation of independent food outlets. The policy is expected to bolster Delhi’s economy and create new jobs. As part of the streamlined licensing process, cloud kitchen operators and entrepreneurs will be able to apply for licenses through a single-window portal, eliminating the need to approach multiple government organizations.
The current lack of a comprehensive policy has led to many individuals operating cloud kitchens without the necessary licenses. It is estimated that around 20,000 cloud kitchens and independent food outlets are currently operational in different parts of Delhi, employing approximately 400,000 individuals.
The upcoming policy aims to address the licensing challenges faced by cloud kitchen operators and provide a framework for the growth and regulation of this sector, while also promoting employment opportunities and contributing to the overall economy of Delhi. (With inputs from PTI)
