DMRC, Blue Dart sign MoU to launch metro-based cargo transport

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Blue Dart for providing urban logistics services across the national capital region (NCR).

Aiming to foster more sustainable logistics solutions, the service is part of a strategic collaboration between DMRC and Blue Dart. The innovative initiative, the first of its kind in the entire South Asia Pacific region, reinforces both DMRC and Blue Dart’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

A senior DMRC official said Blue Dart will use metro trains to transport cargo during non-peak hours, utilising available capacity for faster and more reliable movement of time-sensitive shipments. This initiative aims to reduce dependency on road transport, easing congestion and curbing vehicular emissions. At the same time, DMRC will optimise its resources while reinforcing its commitment to eco-friendly transport solutions.

The official added that metro systems worldwide are looking at ways to use spare capacity to generate revenue while promoting sustainability. Madrid Metro, for instance, has launched a pilot project with logistics partners to transport parcels via metro trains, helping reduce road traffic and pollution. DMRC is engaging with Madrid Metro to exchange insights and best practices in urban freight transportation.

The official said that the project aims to enhance supply chain efficiency by integrating first-mile and last-mile connectivity through metro-enabled logistics solutions and Micro Parcel Hubs. This initiative also helps reduce road congestion and urban pollution. He added that DMRC is utilising its stations and tracks to create a sustainable urban freight network across Delhi-NCR.

The official said the collaboration emphasises the need to overcome operational challenges and adopt global best practices to improve urban cargo movement. He highlighted that exchanging expertise, and benchmarking will be crucial in scaling the project’s impact. The initiative also aims to enhance operational efficiency, reduce delivery timelines, and support urban freight systems with lower carbon emissions by repurposing metro premises into logistics hubs.

Discussing DMRC’s long-term vision, he said that the cargo network is planned for expansion to additional metro stations, setting new benchmarks in sustainable and seamless freight transportation.
