Fog delays trains, disrupts flight ops in Delhi, light rain likely today

Delhi: The national capital is expected to receive light rain during the day, according to the weather department.

The city experienced fog in the early morning, with a generally cloudy sky prevailing. Delhi recorded 2.2 mm of rainfall by 8:30 am, and the minimum temperature stood at 9 degrees Celsius, one degree above the seasonal average.

According to the Indian Railways, 25 trains to Delhi are running late due to fog conditions in the national capital and parts of north India.

Some of the trains running late are Purushottam Superfast Express, Farakka Express, Anvt Humsafar and S Kranti Superfast Express. Some flights were delayed at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted a generally cloudy sky with light rain during the day, with the maximum temperature likely to reach 16 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels were at 100 percent at 8:30 am.

Parts of Delhi, including Central Delhi, witnessed light rain on Saturday. At 9 am, the air quality was categorized as ‘poor,’ with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 284, as per Central Pollution Control Board data. An AQI between 201 and 300 is considered ‘poor.’

Light rain was reported on Saturday evening, with the city recording a low of 7.7 degrees Celsius, according to the IMD. The dense fog in the morning reduced visibility and disrupted train operations, delaying 45 trains. The maximum temperature settled at 17 degrees Celsius, three degrees below the seasonal average.

Rainfall measurements from various weather stations included 1.6 mm at Safdarjung, 2.4 mm at Palam, 2 mm at Delhi University, 1.5 mm at Pusa, and 4 mm at Najafgarh, according to IMD data.

The department’s latest forecast indicated continued rainfall in several parts of Delhi-NCR, including Karawal Nagar, Dilshad Garden, Seemapuri, Shahdara, Vivek Vihar, Preet Vihar, Jafarpur, Najafgarh, Dwarka, Akshardham, Ayanagar, and Deramandi, over the coming hours.

Safdarjung recorded a minimum visibility of 50 meters from 12:30 am to 1:30 am, which later improved to 200 meters and remained so until 7:30 am. The minimum temperature remained at 7.7 degrees Celsius, which is normal for the season, with 100 percent humidity during the day.

For Sunday, the weather department has forecast a generally cloudy sky with light rain, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to settle around 17 and 11 degrees Celsius, respectively.
