In a move aimed at aiding some of the most vulnerable sections of society, the National Food Security cardholders in Delhi will now have the privilege of accessing free sugar. This development follows Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s approval of a Cabinet resolution on Monday.

During July, the Delhi Cabinet endorsed the proposal for distributing sugar without charge to families grappling with economic adversities. This benefit will be in addition to the beneficiaries’ existing allocations of wheat and rice.

The decision holds the potential to assist 68,747 National Food Security cardholders, encompassing a total of 2,80,290 individuals within Delhi. The financial allocation earmarked for this endeavor stands at approximately Rs 111 crore, as elucidated by a statement from the chief minister’s office.

The primary objective behind this initiative is dual-pronged. It aims to alleviate the difficulties faced by financially disadvantaged households while concurrently fortifying food security levels for all residents. By extending essential assistance to those most in need, the Delhi government underscores its commitment to nurturing a more equitable societal landscape.

Those who fall under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana category are entitled to avail free sugar within the framework of this subsidy program. This benefit is slated to be available for a duration of one year, spanning from January 2023 to December 2023. This sustained aid underscores the government’s dedication to providing continuous support to those who are most reliant on it, as delineated in the official statement.
