Kejriwal eating sweets, mangoes despite diabetes to make grounds for bail: ED to court

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, detained in an excise scam case, is reportedly consuming foods high in sugar, such as mangoes and sweets, on a daily basis despite being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

This alleged behaviour, according to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), is aimed at establishing grounds for medical bail.

The ED made this claim before special judge Kaveri Baweja, who directed Tihar jail authorities to submit a report, including Kejriwal’s dietary habits.

Kejriwal has requested permission to consult his regular doctor via video conference due to fluctuating sugar levels.

The judge instructed the authorities to provide the report by tomorrow’s hearing.

Kejriwal’s legal representative indicated the withdrawal of an application to file a revised one, while the ED expressed concern over the “alarming increase in diabetic levels” mentioned in the application.

The court disposed of the application but scheduled a hearing for the following day, requesting a medical report from Tihar jail authorities.

Kejriwal’s arrest by the ED on March 21 has sparked legal battles, including a plea challenging his arrest, which was dismissed by the Delhi High Court on April 10.

Kejriwal has challenged this decision before the Supreme Court. Additionally, AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh are implicated in the case, with Sisodia in custody and Singh recently granted bail.

The ED alleges Kejriwal’s involvement as the “kingpin” of the scam, orchestrating proceeds of crime exceeding Rs. 100 crores.

The agency claims a conspiracy involving giving undue profits to certain private companies, coordinated by individuals including Vijay Nair on behalf of Kejriwal and Sisodia. (With inputs from PTI)
