With the aim of upskilling more than 300 cardiologists and radiologists across India in advanced imaging techniques for structural heart diseases, Philips and Medtronic have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The initiative focuses on multi-modality imaging, including echocardiography (echo) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), with a particular emphasis on benefiting End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients.

Advanced training for better outcomes

The training will be delivered through a combination of theoretical sessions and hands-on experience using Philips’ advanced ultrasound and MRI systems. Renowned Indian and international experts will conduct these sessions at 15 key medical institutions specialising in structural heart procedures.

Bharath Sesha, Managing Director, Philips Indian Subcontinent, underscored the importance of innovation and education in improving healthcare outcomes. “Our goal is to empower clinicians with advanced imaging techniques, enabling more accurate diagnoses and better patient care, especially for ESRD patients,” he said.

Mandeep Singh Kumar, Managing Director & Vice President, Medtronic India, highlighted the collaboration’s impact on TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) procedures. “By equipping healthcare professionals with specialised training and imaging solutions, we aim to enhance precision in TAVI procedures and improve patient outcomes,” he added.

Addressing India’s growing CKD burden

With India witnessing over 2.2 lakh new ESRD cases annually, the demand for advanced diagnostic solutions is increasing. Studies indicate that 9.5% of ESRD patients with Aortic Stenosis could significantly benefit from enhanced imaging during Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedures.

Medtronic recently marked 20 years of its TAVR system, revolutionising minimally invasive heart valve replacement and advancing cardiovascular care worldwide. Meanwhile, Philips’ AI-driven software, capable of analysing aortic anatomy using 3D TEE and MRI, eliminates the need for nephrotoxic radiopaque contrast agents, ensuring safer diagnostic approaches for kidney patients.

Through this partnership, Philips and Medtronic aim to bridge the skill gap in structural heart imaging, enhancing clinical expertise and patient outcomes across India.
