World Cancer Day 2025: Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, but research suggests that many cases are preventable through lifestyle modifications. Adopting healthy habits can significantly lower the risk of developing various types of cancer. Here are some essential lifestyle changes that can help reduce cancer risk:

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Eating a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help prevent cancer. Reduce the intake of processed foods, red meats, and sugary beverages, as they have been linked to an increased risk of cancer. Foods rich in antioxidants, such as berries, nuts, and leafy greens, help combat oxidative stress, which can contribute to cancer development.

Stay Physically Active

Regular physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight and lowers the risk of several cancers, including breast, colon, and prostate cancer. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. Activities like walking, cycling, swimming, and yoga can contribute to overall well-being.

Avoid Tobacco and Limit Alcohol

Smoking is one of the primary causes of cancer, particularly lung, throat, and mouth cancers. Quitting smoking and avoiding second-hand smoke can significantly reduce the risk. Additionally, excessive alcohol consumption is linked to liver, breast, and oesophageal cancer. Limiting alcohol intake or avoiding it altogether can be beneficial.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Obesity is associated with an increased risk of various cancers, including breast, colorectal, and pancreatic cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise can lower cancer risk and improve overall health.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

Skin cancer, including melanoma, is one of the most common cancers. To reduce risk, limit exposure to direct sunlight, especially during peak hours (10 AM – 4 PM). Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, wear protective clothing, and avoid tanning beds.

Get Vaccinated

Certain infections can increase cancer risk. Vaccinations against human papillomavirus (HPV) can help prevent cervical and other cancers, while the hepatitis B vaccine can lower the risk of liver cancer. Ensure you are up to date with recommended vaccines.

Manage Stress and Sleep Well

Chronic stress and poor sleep can weaken the immune system, making the body more susceptible to diseases, including cancer. Practising stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and adequate sleep (7-9 hours per night) can enhance overall health.

Regular Screenings and Check-ups

Early detection of cancer increases the chances of successful treatment. Routine screenings, such as mammograms, colonoscopies, and Pap smears, can help detect cancer at an early stage. Consult a doctor for personalised screening recommendations.

In conclusion, making positive lifestyle choices can play a crucial role in reducing cancer risk. By adopting a healthy diet, exercising regularly, avoiding harmful substances, and prioritising preventive care, individuals can significantly lower their chances of developing cancer and lead a healthier life.
