Experts share tips to boost children’s immunity and prevent illness

By making healthy habits a part of their daily routine, parents can play an essential role in helping their children build resilience against infections and illnesses

As children explore the world around them, they are constantly exposed to germs and infections, making them more prone to illness. While occasional sickness can help strengthen their immune systems, experts stress the importance of consistent, proactive measures to keep the kids healthy throughout the year.

Dr Nishant Bansal, a Consultant Paediatrician and Neonatologist at Motherhood Hospitals in Noida, said that building immunity is a gradual process that requires a balanced approach, including proper nutrition, hydration, physical activity, and hygiene.

Parents play a key role in supporting their children’s health, Bansal added.

Nutrition: A foundation for immunity

A well-balanced diet is crucial in supporting a strong immune system. Bansal recommends ensuring that children’s meals include vitamins A, C, and D, along with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lentils, and legumes. “These nutrients help repair body tissues, support antibody production, and strengthen the body’s natural defences against infections,” he explained.

Hydration: Keeping the body refreshed

Hydration is another cornerstone of maintaining a healthy immune system. Bansal points out that many children often neglect their need for water, which can lead to dehydration. “Parents should make sure their children drink plenty of water throughout the day. Healthy fluids such as coconut water or fresh juices can also support proper hydration,” he advised.

Physical activity: Energising the body

Physical activity plays a pivotal role in improving immunity. “Exercise stimulates blood circulation, enhances energy levels, and strengthens the body’s ability to fend off infections. At least one hour of physical activity daily – whether running, swimming or cycling – is important for children’s overall health,” Dr Bansal recommended.

Hygiene: Preventing the Spread of Germs

Good hygiene practices are vital to keeping children healthy. Bansal stressed the importance of teaching children basic hygiene habits such as washing hands before meals, after using the restroom, and after returning from outdoor activities. “Proper hygiene helps prevent the spread of germs, reducing the chances of falling ill,” Bansal said.

The role of sleep and mental well-being

Dr Suhail Lone, another paediatrician, also outlined key strategies for boosting children’s immunity. “While a balanced diet and regular physical activity are essential, sleep plays a crucial role too,” he said, adding: “A well-rested child is less likely to fall ill. Ensure your child gets enough sleep each night to help their immune system regenerate and function effectively.”

Mental well-being also contributes to a child’s overall immunity. “Stress and anxiety can weaken the immune system, so it’s important to maintain a calm and nurturing environment at home,” Lone highlighted

“A happy, stress-free child will be better equipped to fight off infections,” he said.

Natural Immunity Boosters

Suhail also recommends incorporating natural immunity boosters into children’s diets. “Herbal teas made from ginger, tulsi (holy basil), or turmeric are excellent additions. These ingredients have natural anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties,” he added.
