MR MAMAGOTO’S NEW AVATAR

The new outlet at Cyberhub has added world street food to the Japanese menu to catch the attention of office-goers

Mamagoto caught the fancy of the college-goers when it opened at Khan Market. Now it has a new incarnation.

As per Wikipedia, Mamagoto is an interactive, context-aware Japanese dining system which encourage kids to ‘play’ with their food to sense its texture and shape. Inspired by this concept, the idea of Mamagoto is to give customers a fun eating experience.

In its new avatar meant for office-goers, the restaurant takes the playing-with-food aspect up a few notches with its new dishes and the mood of the restaurant. So a range of sushi rolls and other dishes and world street foods now make an appearance on the menu. I am here to check out the food trials before the opening of the restaurant.

The first dish I try is Shrimp & Wasabi Cream (Rs 399), which has been sautéed with caramelised onion, Himalayan salt, seven spice powder and micro greens. It is an interesting dish, though the prawns used — being frozen ones – are not succulent. Chicken Liver Pate Bahn Mi (Rs 399) is a bit of a disappointment because the dish is not bahn mi at all. Instead it is competent pate with some melba toast.

Burmese Curry Pulled Pork Bao (Rs 599) shows the Mamagoto kitchen in its element. It is a tasty dish with supersoft bao buns. Smoked Aubergine with mirin, sake with garlic and onion (Rs 329) is an interesting vegetarian dish. Puchka (Rs 249) is an interesting idea featuring betel leaf with peanuts, onion and lime accompanied with a sweet ginger sauce and red chili. I would have preferred some liquid filling like tom yum broth to complete the puchka experience, though. Corn on the Cob (Rs 249) with Sriracha mayo and parmesan cheese, and togarashi is a delicious treat.

Miso Glazed Salmon (Rs 799) is the first of the mains to be served. It is a pleasant dish which could be better if the salmon were flaky and fresher. Lamb Chops (Rs 1,499) are next and are competent.

Desserts are fun. Mamagoto caramel sponge cake with hot toffee sauce (Rs 289) is sinful and moreish. However white chocolate pannacotta (Rs 289) is not wobbly or light, the chocolate is still cold inside the chocolate lava cake (Rs 289).
