CELEBRATING CULTURES

What: To celebrate Sri Guru Nanak‘s  message of ‘ik onkar’  (there is but one god) and his five hundred and fiftieth birth anniversary along with the intangible  secular spirit  of our national identity, eminent  women vocalists from different regions of  India will come together. Titled ‘The Invisible Divine Kirtaniye’ this festival of women’s voices in Gurbani Sangeet’ will represent different faiths, languages and cultures by singing verses written by Bhakti and Sufi saints Kabir, Farid and Sri Guru Nanak Dev himself, in Pushto, Braj bhasha, Hindi and Punjabi which form an integral part of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Why women singers? Essentially because Sri Guru Nanak Dev was unequivocal in his support for gender equality, “without women there would be no one at all”, “why call her bad from whom the great are born” he wrote and sang. So, what better way there could be of celebrating his legacy?

PEACE TALK

What: In celebration of the first ever International Day of Education, UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) will be hosting a dialogue on the ‘Future of Education’. After an exceptional response at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France in 2019, this is a one of a kind dialogue will be held with a life-size hologram of Mahatma Gandhi. The dialogue will focus on how education can foster the values of non-violence and kindness for the coming generations and help shape their future. The dialogue is open to educators, school teachers, school principals, students, policy-makers, and all those interested in the field of non-violence, peace education, social and emotional learning and education.

MYRIAD HUES

What: Art curator Priyanka Banerjee has decided to start off the new year with a positive and colourful note, thus her recent exhibition will witness different artists working on various contemporary themes of social relevance. Titled ‘Panorama 17’, the mélange of vibrant hues makes the exhibition one of its kind. Dabbling in different mediums like watercolor on paper, acrylic and oil on canvas, ink on paper, mixed media the art works have been executed. The exhibition is full of warmth and colours and will certainly be a warm treat in this cold winter.
