Shankar-Shad Mushaira: A celebration of Urdu poetry

The Shankar Lall Murli Dhar Memorial Society, in collaboration with DCM Shriram Industries Limited, will host the 56th edition of the Shankar-Shad Mushaira on Saturday, April 5, at Modern School, Barakhamba Road. This annual gathering, known for celebrating the timeless legacy of Urdu poetry, will bring together legendary and contemporary poets on one stage.

Established in 1954, the Shankar-Shad Mushaira has become Delhi’s longest-running public Mushaira, preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Urdu literature. Over the years, it has hosted prominent poets such as Josh Malihabadi, Kaifi Azmi, Ali Sardar Jafri, Ahmed Faraz, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, and Jigar Moradabadi, among others. The platform has also provided space for emerging voices, ensuring that the tradition of Urdu poetry continues to thrive.

The 2025 edition will be hosted by Iqbal Ashhar, with renowned poets including Javed Akhtar, Waseem Barelvi, Azhar Iqbal, Nomaan Shauque, Gauhar Raza, Popular Meeruthi, Shabeena Adeeb, Khushbir Singh Shaad, Aleena Itrat, Nusrat Mehdi, and Sheen Kaaf Nizam set to grace the stage. Their verses are expected to captivate the audience and celebrate the essence of Urdu Sher-O-Shayari.

In a bid to encourage young talent, the Society has introduced the Shankar-Shad Shayari Contest, inviting aspiring poets to submit their original compositions. Winners selected by a panel of judges will be felicitated on stage during the event, reflecting the Society’s commitment to nurturing new voices in Urdu literature.

Madhav Bansidhar Shriram, Chairman of the Shankar Lall Murli Dhar Society and Managing Director of DCM Shriram Industries Limited, highlighted the importance of the Mushaira in preserving Urdu’s legacy.

He said, “The Shankar-Shad Mushaira is not just an event but a celebration of the power of poetry to unite people across cultures. For over six decades, this platform has kept the history of Urdu literature alive by bringing together renowned poets and fresh voices. Urdu has been the soul of Delhi, and through this Mushaira, we reaffirm our commitment to preserving this heritage for future generations.”

The Mushaira has been a cornerstone of Delhi’s cultural landscape, promoting the inclusive Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb and keeping alive the spirit of Urdu poetry. With its rich legacy and commitment to excellence, the event continues to draw poetry lovers from all walks of life.

The event will begin at 7:00 PM and is open to all lovers of Urdu poetry. As the tradition continues, the 56th Shankar-Shad Mushaira promises another unforgettable evening of poetic brilliance.
